Scar Tissue & Endometriosis Adhesions: How Pelvic PT Can Help

Fertility is influenced by many factors, including ovulation, egg and sperm quality, hormone function, age, genetics, and overall health. A factor that is often overlooked is mechanical restrictions such as abdominal scars from C-sections or other surgeries and endometriosis adhesions. These restrictions can reduce blood flow to the pelvic organs, which makes function suboptimal for conceiving.

C-section Scars

After a cesarean birth, scar tissue naturally forms as the body heals. After some time, the scar on the low abdomen usually fades, but there’s often deeply rooted scar tissue beneath the visual scar. That scar tissue can become less mobile and adhere to surrounding tissues, including the abdominal wall, fascia, bladder, uterus, or deeper connective tissues, which can lead to reduced blood flow to organs. In terms of fertility, the lack of blood flow can affect the function of the uterus, impacting its ability to conceive and carry to term.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis can lead to chronic inflammation and the formation of adhesions—bands of fibrous tissue that may bind organs together. Adhesions can affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, bowel, bladder, and surrounding connective tissues.

Depending on their location, adhesions may:

  • Restrict normal movement of pelvic organs

  • Contribute to painful intercourse

  • Cause pelvic pain

  • Lead to bowel or bladder symptoms

  • Reduce overall pelvic mobility

The good news is that working with a pelvic health therapist can help reduce adhesions and return good blood flow to the pelvic organs. Interested in learning more?
